Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has expressed his support for the Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative introduced by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the recent G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Maduro has instructed Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil to reach out to his Brazilian counterpart to formally convey Venezuela’s backing for this initiative.

In his remarks, Maduro emphasized Venezuela’s readiness to contribute its expertise from the Local Supply and Production Committees (CLAP) and the School Feeding Program (PAE) to this significant alliance aimed at combating hunger and poverty.

He referred to Lula’s proposals as a breath of “fresh air” amid the current geopolitical landscape, praising Lula’s inaugural address as a “historic moment” that addresses pressing global issues.

Maduro echoed Lula’s concerns raised at the summit regarding the rising levels of hunger and poverty, questioning how such conditions can persist alongside substantial military expenditures. He stressed the importance of addressing these disparities.

The Alliance against Hunger and Poverty has been in development for over a year, involving discussions among 82 nations, as well as collaboration with the African Union, European Union, and various non-governmental organizations.

In his speech, Lula underscored the urgent need for this coalition, stating, “As long as there are families without food on the table… there will be no peace.”

He asserted that well-structured public policies, including income transfers and nutritious school feeding programs, are crucial for eradicating hunger and restoring dignity to individuals.
